Western Washington Reports By Butch DeLagoon Hello, my name is Butch DeLagoon, I live in Auburn,
Wa, and I have
lived here for the past 36 years. I’ve been fishing Steady for the
last 13 years. I love to fish all the lakes around the area, mostly
catching trout, crappie, catfish, and some bass. Sometimes fishing 4 to
5 lakes in one day. PLEASE NOTE: Fishing reports were
suspended for several months but have been continued again so please
check back often as I will again be reporting on a regular basis or at
least as weather allows. |

Morton Lake Well it started out good then it was very slow! A lot of fish where planted in this lake but I haven’t seen very much of them caught when I’ve been fishing there. I did happen to catch a couple of 2 pound hold over’s that measured 20” I was very happy. If you need some help on lakes around the area or any questions on what bait to use or setup on the lakes, just send me an e-mail Fishguts04@comcast.net I will be heading out to lake Kapowsin and lake Meridian over the weekend until next time Happy Fishing!!! 3/29/02 Previous Reports: Well, I finally started doing some Salmon fishing. So I'll be doing some reports on the places I fish and as well as the Lake reports. This picture, I was fishing at Redondo. Out in a boat about 200 yards west of the boat launch.
09/23/01 I have been Salmon fishing for the last two month’s and now I’m done. So I’m glad to say, “It’s back to the Lakes.” So here’s were I’ve been. And like always please e-mail me with your questions or comments. Thanks! Morton Lake I did see a couple of people fishing over the weekend but nothing caught. I’ll be fishing this lake for about another month.Lake Meridian Still catching fish at this lake. A little slow but the fish are good in size. With the change in the weather I’m sure it will be slow around all the lakes. I did take my boat out and did see a lot of fish on the fish finder. So I’ll be fishing this lake because I know there are fish here.Lake Kapowsin Will someone wake me up! It was sunny, the lake was like glass, and the fish were rolling on the top of the water. But I could not catch one even if I paid it. Story is, It’s been a long time that anybody’s had a limit here. But It’s picking up! That’s what I was told or did they just want my money? I stayed as long as I could before falling asleep. I think I’ll take the boat out next time. This way I’ll have the fish finder with me.Steel Lake Saw people fishing off the dock but no fish caught. I think the fish left. I saw for rent signs floating on top of the water. (ha ha)Ohop Lake Yes It’s the same as the other lakes, people fishing but no fish caught. I’m heading out to some of the Lakes that will be closing, and gearing up for the Lakes that are all year around. I will find those fish! (ha ha) Until then Happy Fishing!!! Not to many boats were out. It was about 9:30 am. I rigged up with a flasher and trailing a herring behind it. Two day's before there were three Salmon caught, two 31lbs and one 34lbs. So I'm heading out all weekend and well keep you up to date! Also with some lake reports. Until then Happy Fishing!
06/30/01Twin Lakes Hello, I finally took a trip north to Twin Lakes, what fun I had seeing the people catch fish. I saw 2 boats out in the water but most of the fishing was done from the shore. Most of the people were fishing in the south side Lake, fishing for trout, bass and catfish. I saw those types of fish being caught. I took a walk around the lake and noticed that on the west side of the lake people were fishing for bass and catfish. And on the east side people were fishing for trout. I did not bring my pole this time so I was just watching. I sure got a treat watching this boy about 15 yrs old catch a 6 lbs largemouth bass and as I was leaving to continue my walk around the lake he hollered out I got another one. This was a 7 ½ lbs catfish, even I had goose bumps watching him land it. There are a couple of other lakes in the area such as Stevens Lake, Cottage Lake and Lake Martha. I would try those lakes too. Tips for the lake. I’ve never fished this lake before, but my friends have. Fishing in the south lake you’re most likely to catch trout and some small bass. And fishing in the north lake you’ll find some good catfish and some bass. I did not see many boats out in the water, all the fishing was done from the shore using a bobber and worm. Catching bass I saw people also using shrimp.Up dates on some other lakes. Lake Kapowsin is still doing well, I’m still seeing people catch their limits. Lake Meridian is also doing well. I’ll be giving reports on some salmon fishing in the area, as I gear up for that. If you’ve got a question ect. Let me know. Happy Fishing! Lake Kapowsin
Lake
Meridian 05/02/01-05/03/01 Just
another report for Lake Meridian. The pictures are what I caught on the
two day’s I fished. This lake is a very good spot to fish right now, so
if you get a chance try this lake. I’m headed out to Steel Lake and Lake
Geneva this weekend so I’ll have a report for you. If you’ve got some
tips or a hot lake that the fish are biting? Let me know. Thanks and Happy
Fishing. Lake Meridian 04/30/01-05/01/01 Here’s
a lake you must fish! The state planted almost 1,000 fish here and boy are
they hungry. I went out the first day and had my limit in 1 hr. (picture
1) the second day I had my limit in 1 ½ hrs. (picture 2) I fished off the
dock using a slip bobber and worm I was about 5 to 6 feet deep. Believe me
with all the bites I was getting I sure had fun. It has been quit awhile since I’ve fished this lake but it seems like nothing has changed with the way to fish for these trout. People fishing on the dock next to me were catching their limit to. Some with a bobber and worm some fishing off the bottom with power bait. So try to fish this lake if you can either from the dock or in a boat and have some fun. Happy fishing! Good Luck.
Tips
for Lake Meridian Fishing
from the dock. I say try fishing with a bobber and worm. I’d start about
4 feet deep if you catch little fish go 2 to 3 feet deeper. I was about 4
feet deep and caught the two little fish so I went deeper and caught fish
that were a little bigger. You can also try from the bottom using power
bait (try bright colors such as rainbow, orange) using a 6-foot leader. Fishing
in a boat I’ve always trolled back and forth in front of the dock just
after the plant. My theory behind this is all the fish are still there,
during the summer months then they make there way down to the other side
of the lake. So fish around the dock then make your way down the lake.
When the weather is nice and the water is clear like glass you will see
them surface. Use a wedding ring (green or red) pop gear if you got it and
troll slowly. Using a dick night will work too. Still fishing from the
boat is also good if you’ve got a fish finder there are some deep holes
in this lake. Fishing
from the shore I’ve tried this at the boat launch and from the grass but
the only thing I caught were perch. Using a bobber and worm 2 to 4 feet
deep. If these tips help you let me know just e-mail me, and if you have a good tip for the lake let me know too. Thanks! And Happy Fishing. Silver Lake 04/29/01 I
thought it was going to snow! That’s how cold it was here at Silver Lake
in Pierce County. It was very windy but no rain. I got there at 5:00 am
and was fishing from the dock at 5:30 am within 15 Minutes I had my limit,
I was home by 8:00 am. And with all the pictures inside the office of fish
caught the day before, I figured I wasn’t going to be there very long.
I fished from the middle of the dock using a slip bobber and worm.
I was about 3 ½ to 4 feet deep. Set up was simple with all the fish in
this lake there going to bite on anything. There were a couple of people
fishing from the bottom using power bait and that was working too.
This lake will be good for a couple of months, lots of fish to be
caught. In mid June and July is a good time to fish for bass. I know there
are some big bass in this lake. So try this lake out. There is a resort
for over niters and they do charge to launch a boat or fish off the dock
but it’s worth it. Good Luck! Tips for Silver Lake Fishing
from the dock. This is a really long dock so you have a lot of room to
fish. I like to fish with a bobber and worm. Maggots work also. Try
fishing about 3 to 4 feet deep if you catch little fish go another 2 to 3
feet deeper. Fishing off
the bottom. Try a slip sinker and 18” leader with power bait. Any color.
Mealworms work well to. Keep some slack in the line and let the
fish take the bait, but if you fishing for catfish leave the line tight. Fishing from a
boat. Troll using a wedding ring (green or red) use your pop gear if you
want. I usually troll strait out from the dock going back and forth. If
you want to still fish go across the lake were the farmhouse is and fish
with a bobber and worm. Also fish in the middle of the lake. When the
water is smooth, as glass you will see the fish surface, believe me then
you’ll know were to go with the boat. Fishing for
Bass and Catfish. In the months of June, July fishing for bass is very
good. If you’re looking out from the boat launch fish the right side of
the lake, in the lily pads. And try all along the edges.
If you’ve got some tips or comments for this
lake please e-mail me and let me know. And let me know if these tips help
you. Like to here about it! Thanks and happy fishing! Riffe Lake 02/03/01 Power crunch? I think yes, with this Lake open all year round with 11,830 acres to fish there should be no problem fishing. About 4 years ago this Lake was low but this is the lowest I’ve seen it as you can see from the pictures. I usually fish at the dam but I could not find one single person fishing. I would have had to walk down another 15 feet after the walkway ended just to get to the water. I drove to the other side to Riffe Park to see what that looked like. The water was farther out from the campsite. I could not find anybody fishing. I would think with all the water that was let out that would equal less water more fish? The worms I bought are the lucky ones this time.
I do like driving to Riffe Lake because if the fish are not biting I’ve got about 5-6 other lakes to fish at on the way home. Like Alder Lake, oh wait a minute where did the water go? Here’s another lake that’s low (really low) this was a site to see I could not believe it. I stopped at a couple more lakes on the way home like Ohop Lake and Tanwax Lake, of course these lakes are not all year around anymore so you’ve got to wait until April to fish them. Same with Mineral Lake and Clear Lake. When I took pictures at Mineral Lake and Clear Lake the fish were rolling on top of the water all across the lake. I do know they planted trout in Mineral Lake. Tips for Riffe Lake I mostly fish this lake for trout from the dam using a slip bobber with a worm on the hook. I usually start fishing 10 feet down from the surface then I’ll go to 15 feet down to 20-25 feet. If you keep catching little fish go another 5-10 feet. I’ve seen fishermen throw a Dick Night or a Rooster Tail also but I’ve never seen anything caught that way. If you’ve got a tip for fishing from a boat let me know. Here’s a question: With a lot of Lakes changing from all year round to April thru Oct. How do you feel about it? If you have a comment or opinion on this or anything about fishing please e-mail me and let me know. Happy Fishing!!! Lake Kapowsin 01/20/01
I got there a little after sunrise. The weather was overcast some clearing. The water looked like a sheet of glass and it was cold. I decided to fish from the dock but there was only one problem, the fish were not biting! I’ve never had this problem before. I talked to the gentlemen that runs the boathouse. it seems this lake has not been stocked with trout for the last 2 years. You know what happens to lakes with no stocked fish--no fish no fun, he did say he was trying to get the state to stock it this year, I hope he suceeds. A couple years back you could fish half the day there and catch at least 3 trout if not limit out. The fish weren’t very long in length but they were sure nice and fat. But times have changed. There is some good news though. The fish that are still there are much bigger, 5 pounds and over. That’s really good for a lake like this! I saw some pictures in the boathouse from late last year and we’re talking 9-10 pound rainbow trout I’m sure there’s a lot more out there but do you have the time and patience for one of these big ones to hit your line? Of course, there’s bass to catch. With this lake being nicknamed Stump Lake or Log Lake there’s plenty of good spots to find them, or you might hook into a catfish but nothing in size. If you’ve got the time to try catching one of those big boys, it would be better with a boat. There is a little wooden boat ramp that you can slide your 10’, 12’, even your 14’ down into the water. They do rent boats and trolling motors. Then maybe we’ll see your picture on the wall holding a nice 10 pounder! Tips for Lake Kapowsin I’ve fished this lake for the past 10 years, I do have some good tips for all to use. The lake covers 512 acres. It is muddy and dirty. If you’re fishing off the dock, it’s best to use a slip sinker with an 18" leader off the bottom. My preference of bait is Power Bait rainbow, orange, spring green. There’s the old marshmallow with worm bait that works well, too. Cast out and leave your bail open with some slack. For boat fishing, use a red or green wedding ring with a worm, no weight, trolling slow so the wedding ring and worms close to the surface. If no luck try a little split shot for weight. Now here’s the key to this set up. Don’t use the leader that comes with the wedding ring TAKE IT OFF Make one using 4 pound test or even 6 pound test. You’ll have much better luck. Try fishing along the power lines that run North & South, just west of the dock. If you’ve got a fish finder it would be useful. A true fishermen would say that’s cheating but I say take my picture with that 10 pounder I caught using it. If bass fishing, anywhere along the shore is good. There’s a lot of shore. Take a plastic worm and jig it on the bottom, reeling slowly. To catch crappie and yellow perch, the old standerd is good (worm/hook) You know the rest. I hope these tips work for you! Any questions comments, etc., feel free to e-mail me, I believe the more information we can pass along the better fishing all us fishermen/fisherwoman will have. Happy Fishing!!! Morton Lake 1-23-01 This lake is 66 acres and a great lake to fish all year round. The day I was there it was sunny but very windy. The state plants this lake and you can fish here either from the shore or in a boat. Most people only come and fish for the first 3 months after it’s been planted so it’s even better fishing the rest of the year. Most of the time you’ll leave with a couple of nice trout or limit out. I have never been out in a boat on this lake but have seen some nice fish come in. I’m planning on taking the boat out next week so I’ll let you know what luck I have. This lake hasn’t been planted yet this year Tips for the Lake I do like fishing from the shore but you’re limited on space. Using a slip sinker with an 18" leader on the bottom should do the trick. Use Power Bait: Rainbow, Spring green is my choice but try them all. Keep your line tight and watch the tip of your rod. When fishing from the shore watch out for people launching their boats. Fishing from a boat, most people troll using a wedding ring (green or red) with Power Bait. Or pop gear. When I take my boat out I’ll try some different set ups and let you know. Fisherman have told me that when trolling the fish hit very lightly so keep that in mind when out in a boat. Happy fishing!!!
