Western Washington Reports

By Butch DeLagoon

Hello, my name is Butch DeLagoon, I live in Auburn, Wa, and I have lived here for the past 36 years. I’ve been fishing Steady for the last 13 years. I love to fish all the lakes around the area, mostly catching trout, crappie, catfish, and some bass. Sometimes fishing 4 to 5 lakes in one day.  PLEASE NOTE: Fishing reports were suspended for several months but have been continued again so please check back often as I will again be reporting on a regular basis or at least as weather allows.
PLEASE E-MAIL ME
if you have any questions, comments, or info about these places to fish in Western Washington.

Here’s some of the lakes I’ll be reporting on but not limited to:

  • Desire Lake

  • Fenwick Lake

  • Fivemile Lake

  • Morton Lake

  • Kapowsin Lake

  • Riffe Lake

  • Tanwax Lake

  • Silver Lake

I have a complete list of lakes that I will be reporting on and if you E-mail me, I’ll be glad to send it to you. Thanks and Happy Fishing!!!

06/23/04

I would like to first thank you for all the E-mails and please keep them coming. Now to the reports.

Morton Lake: I have seen a lot of little trout caught, but nothing to size.

Lake Meridian: There have been a lot of fish caught in this lake. I’ve seen a lot of Triploids reeled in. I would fish this lake now.

Lake Kapowsin: Slow, but if you want to try your luck on catching the big one try this lake and if you don’t get any bites your close to Ohop Lake

American Lake: I’ve always thought that you need a boat for this lake, and I still think that you do. Try trolling with a worm or wedding ring and it should do the trick.

Silver Lake: Wow I’ve seen some big fish come out of this lake. I would try this lake fishing from the bottom with about a 4’-5’ leader or if you have a boat troll with a wedding ring.

Good luck and please E-mail me with all you questions @

 Morton Lake

Well it started out good then it was very slow! A lot of fish where planted in this lake but I haven’t seen very much of them caught when I’ve been fishing there.  I did happen to catch a couple of 2 pound hold over’s that measured 20” I was very happy. If you need some help on lakes around the area or any questions on what bait to use or setup on the lakes, just send me an e-mail Fishguts04@comcast.net I will be heading out to lake Kapowsin and lake Meridian over the weekend until next time Happy Fishing!!!

For all the people that have seen my site I’d like to say Thanks for looking and E-mailing me with your questions. Keep them coming and I’ll answer to all.

Hello! Here are the latest Lake reports

Riffe Lake: Slow, I saw a few fish caught but nothing in size. The water level is down but not as bad as it has been in the last few years. The water level is up enough to fish at the dam.

Alder Lake: Slow, Not to many people fishing this Lake. The water level is down but not like it has been.

Mineral Lake: I would fish this Lake before it closes for the season. Either off the dock your in a boat. I saw some good size fish caught over the weekend.

Ohop Lake: This is another lake I would fish before it closes for the season. I saw some good size trout 14”-17” caught over the weekend in boats and off the shore.

Lake Kapowsin: Slow, Most people were fishing for Bass. I like to fish this Lake during the winter. The State usually plants more fish during the fall.

Silver Lake: I would try to fish this Lake before it closes for the season. Fishing from the dock or in a boat.

If you need some tips on what to use or how to fish these lakes, or questions on some other Lakes in the area just E-mail me at fishguts04@comcast.net until the next report Happy Fishing!!!

Lake Meridian:

Here’s a couple of the fish I caught off the dock. I saw a lot of fish caught. Even though it was cold and windy the dock was full and the fish were biting. There weren’t too many boats out in the water.
There were some good size fish caught during the morning and during the day.

Tips for the lake: Fishing off the dock use a 7’-8’ leader off the bottom. I would use power bait, but I saw fish caught with just a worm on the hook. There are not to many people fishing with a bobber, I would fish off the bottom, but make sure the leader is the long you want to get the bait above the weeds.
Out in the boat: Still fish off the bottom or troll using pop gear, wedding ring, or trail a worm with some weight.

General note: remember that the city opens the park gate at 7:00am and closes at 9:00pm

I will have a full report on some south lakes next time. And remember if you have any questions please Click Here To E-MAIL ME Until then Happy Fishing!!!

04/27/02

Well Silver Lake was really hopping on opening day. I never saw so much fish caught. I can’t believe how big these fish were, where talking from 1’ to 2 ½’ fish Rainbow and Brown Trout. Even though it was raining all day it seemed that everyone was having fun. I counted at least 60 boats in the water, and the dock was full. I hope you can get a chance to fish this lake. It would be worth it.

Tips for the lake: (In a boat) I’ve always trolled using pop gear and a wedding ring (red or green) or trail with a worm using a little weight to get down in the water.

(Off the dock) use a slip bobber with a worm or meal worm, maggots. Fishing off the bottom use power bait with a 3’-4’ leader if you don’t get any bites with the set up your using change the length of your leader.
Until then Happy Fishing!!!

04/26/02

Here are some nice Trout that I caught at Lake Morton. Just before the season opener. I fished from the shore using power bait off the bottom. The only thing I changed was my leader. The last couple weeks I’ve been using an 18” leader but I’ve changed to a 3’-4’ leader, and still using a slip bobber.

I’ll be fishing at Lake Meridian in the next couple weeks. For the opener I’ll be going to Clear Lake. Until then Happy Fishing!!!

3/29/02

Hello, I’m back with some more fishing reports. I took some time to get a few things together and now I’m back on the road. (So to speak) Fishing and finding the hot spots to go.

They have been planting fish in the King and Pierce County area. If you go on the WDFW website (It can be reached through this site) they have a list called the Spring 2002 Hatchery Trout Stocking Plan. There it lists all the Lake and Stream plants with dates on when they will plant.

Morton Lake
I’ve seen limits coming out of this lake. Mostly all planters. But the longest I’ve been there is 2 hours with my limit. I haven’t seen much fish coming in with the people out in the boats, mostly from the people fishing off the shore.

Lake Meridian
As of now I don’t think this lake as been planted yet. But when it is you better get there when the gate opens. I had very good luck last year right after it was planted. 15 min. and I had my limit not just 1 day but 2 day’s in a row.
Saw a triploid caught about a month ago, right off the dock. 18” about 2 1/2 lbs.

Lake Kapowsin
This lake was planted already but only with about 2,000 fish so far. The stock plan say’s about 15,000 will be planted in this Lake Apr-May. I’ve seen some good fish caught already 10”-16” and from 1-2lbs.

I’ll be heading to Riffe Lake and working my way north with more. With tips for the Lakes and where the hot spots are.
If you’ve got a question or comment e-mail me. Let me know what’s on your mind, if you’ve got a tip about a Lake ect.
E-mail me a fishguts04@comcast.net or Fishguts02@aol.com
Until next time Happy Fishing!!!

Previous Reports:

Well, I finally started doing some Salmon fishing. So I'll be doing some reports on the places I fish and as well as the Lake reports. This picture, I was fishing at Redondo. Out in a boat about 200 yards west of the boat launch.

09/23/01

I have been Salmon fishing for the last two month’s and now I’m done. So I’m glad to say, “It’s back to the Lakes.” So here’s were I’ve been. And like always please e-mail me with your questions or comments. Thanks!

Morton Lake I did see a couple of people fishing over the weekend but nothing caught. I’ll be fishing this lake for about another month.

Lake Meridian Still catching fish at this lake. A little slow but the fish are good in size. With the change in the weather I’m sure it will be slow around all the lakes. I did take my boat out and did see a lot of fish on the fish finder. So I’ll be fishing this lake because I know there are fish here.

Lake Kapowsin Will someone wake me up! It was sunny, the lake was like glass, and the fish were rolling on the top of the water. But I could not catch one even if I paid it. Story is, It’s been a long time that anybody’s had a limit here. But It’s picking up! That’s what I was told or did they just want my money? I stayed as long as I could before falling asleep. I think I’ll take the boat out next time. This way I’ll have the fish finder with me.

Steel Lake Saw people fishing off the dock but no fish caught. I think the fish left. I saw for rent signs floating on top of the water. (ha ha)

Ohop Lake Yes It’s the same as the other lakes, people fishing but no fish caught.

I’m heading out to some of the Lakes that will be closing, and gearing up for the Lakes that are all year around. I will find those fish! (ha ha) Until then Happy Fishing!!!

Not to many boats were out. It was about 9:30 am. I rigged up with a flasher and trailing a herring behind it. Two day's before there were three Salmon caught, two 31lbs and one 34lbs. So I'm heading out all weekend and well keep you up to date! Also with some lake reports. Until then Happy Fishing!

06/30/01Twin Lakes Hello, I finally took a trip north to Twin Lakes, what fun I had seeing the people catch fish. I saw 2 boats out in the water but most of the fishing was done from the shore. Most of the people were fishing in the south side Lake, fishing for trout, bass and catfish. I saw those types of fish being caught. I took a walk around the lake and noticed that on the west side of the lake people were fishing for bass and catfish. And on the east side people were fishing for trout. I did not bring my pole this time so I was just watching. I sure got a treat watching this boy about 15 yrs old catch a 6 lbs largemouth bass and as I was leaving to continue my walk around the lake he hollered out I got another one. This was a 7 ½ lbs catfish, even I had goose bumps watching him land it.   There are a couple of other lakes in the area such as Stevens Lake, Cottage Lake and Lake Martha. I would try those lakes too.   Tips for the lake. I’ve never fished this lake before, but my friends have. Fishing in the south lake you’re most likely to catch trout and some small bass. And fishing in the north lake you’ll find some good catfish and some bass. I did not see many boats out in the water, all the fishing was done from the shore using a bobber and worm. Catching bass I saw people also using shrimp.Up dates on some other lakes.  Lake Kapowsin is still doing well, I’m still seeing people catch their limits. Lake Meridian is also doing well. I’ll be giving reports on some salmon fishing in the area, as I gear up for that. If you’ve got a question ect. Let me know. Happy Fishing!

Lake Kapowsin
06/06/01-06/07/01

Got out there about 8:00 in the morning. It was overcast but there was no wind. In the
2 hours that it took for me to catch my limit I saw 6 other people do the same. The fish were biting like crazy! And it wasn't just with one set up. I was using a marshmallow and maggots but other people were using power nuggets with a worm so it didn't matter what you were using. The next day I got there about 8 and had my limit in 3 hours, the sun was out and it was very hot. I had planed on going to Ohop Lake but I had my limit so I was on my way home. I would try this lake for some fun fishing. I also saw people catching perch and even crappie. But I was after trout.

I'm still heading out to Ohop Lake this weekend but wanted to let people know that this is another lake that seems to be a hot spot now. So if you're in the area grab your pole and go fishing!

Lake Meridian
There still catching fish at this lake. And still very nice trout, I've seen people catch perch about the same size as the trout being caught, but this was before closing.

Harts Lake
I have not been there yet this year but a lot of people I've talked to say that there are a lot of limits coming out of this lake. I'll be there in a couple of weeks.

Spanaway Lake
Well as of this morning the state was planting some more Triploids in this lake.
But if you were there around 8-9 o clock you could not find a place to fish, It was packed!

Tanwax Lake
The day I was out there I only saw one fish come in. It was very slow.

Well if you have any questions or anything else about fishing feel free to E-mail me and Happy Fishing!

Lake Meridian
06/01/01-06/02/01

Yes I'm still fishing at Lake Meridian and catching the limit. I went out and had the limit within 4 hours and the same time the next day. Still see a lot of boats out in the lake and bringing there limit in. This lake is still a hot spot for fishing. So try to fish this one. Funny though It seem that the fish I've seen caught are a lot bigger then a month ago. I also have seen Bass and some good size Perch caught already. They did plant more Triploids 290

Steel Lake

Went to Steel Lake but did not fish there, too many people. It was a very hot day and there were people swimming, Fishing. There weren't to many boats out there but I saw some Trout caught off the dock. Using a 6' leader off the bottom and bobber off the top.

Ohop Lake

Besides planting 20,000 fish in this lake they planted another 500 Triploids last month. Man this is a good thing for this small lake. I've fished from the boat launch, on the side of the road and from the parking lot. Fish, Fish, Fish that's all I got to say. I'll be there this Saturday. And I'll be throwing my boat in the truck.
The one thing I do like when I go to this lake is that if the fish are not bitting I've got 4-5 more lakes I can go to on my way back home.

Tips for the Lake

I've fished this lake for along time and this lake is not very deep. They have cleaned it up and put a fence around the parking lot. But there's fishing on the side of the road. I've had my best luck using a slip sinker off the bottom with an 18" leader. And power bait is the choice. Rainbow, Orange, Green.

So Good luck and Happy Fishing. Let me know how your fishing is going and if you have any questions, send me an E-mail.

I will do a report this weekend on these lake's, Tanwax, Clear, Ohop and Kapowsin.

Lake Meridian

05/02/01-05/03/01

Just another report for Lake Meridian. The pictures are what I caught on the two day’s I fished. This lake is a very good spot to fish right now, so if you get a chance try this lake. I’m headed out to Steel Lake and Lake Geneva this weekend so I’ll have a report for you. If you’ve got some tips or a hot lake that the fish are biting? Let me know. Thanks and Happy Fishing.

Lake Meridian

04/30/01-05/01/01

Here’s a lake you must fish! The state planted almost 1,000 fish here and boy are they hungry. I went out the first day and had my limit in 1 hr. (picture 1) the second day I had my limit in 1 ½ hrs. (picture 2) I fished off the dock using a slip bobber and worm I was about 5 to 6 feet deep. Believe me with all the bites I was getting I sure had fun.

It has been quit awhile since I’ve fished this lake but it seems like nothing has changed with the way to fish for these trout. People fishing on the dock next to me were catching their limit to. Some with a bobber and worm some fishing off the bottom with power bait. So try to fish this lake if you can either from the dock or in a boat and have some fun. Happy fishing! Good Luck.

           Tips for Lake Meridian

Fishing from the dock. I say try fishing with a bobber and worm. I’d start about 4 feet deep if you catch little fish go 2 to 3 feet deeper. I was about 4 feet deep and caught the two little fish so I went deeper and caught fish that were a little bigger. You can also try from the bottom using power bait (try bright colors such as rainbow, orange) using a 6-foot leader.

Fishing in a boat I’ve always trolled back and forth in front of the dock just after the plant. My theory behind this is all the fish are still there, during the summer months then they make there way down to the other side of the lake. So fish around the dock then make your way down the lake. When the weather is nice and the water is clear like glass you will see them surface. Use a wedding ring (green or red) pop gear if you got it and troll slowly. Using a dick night will work too. Still fishing from the boat is also good if you’ve got a fish finder there are some deep holes in this lake.

Fishing from the shore I’ve tried this at the boat launch and from the grass but the only thing I caught were perch. Using a bobber and worm 2 to 4 feet deep.

If these tips help you let me know just e-mail me, and if you have a good tip for the lake let me know too. Thanks! And Happy Fishing.

 Silver Lake

04/29/01

I thought it was going to snow! That’s how cold it was here at Silver Lake in Pierce County. It was very windy but no rain. I got there at 5:00 am and was fishing from the dock at 5:30 am within 15 Minutes I had my limit, I was home by 8:00 am. And with all the pictures inside the office of fish caught the day before, I figured I wasn’t going to be there very long.

I fished from the middle of the dock using a slip bobber and worm. I was about 3 ½ to 4 feet deep. Set up was simple with all the fish in this lake there going to bite on anything. There were a couple of people fishing from the bottom using power bait and that was working too.

This lake will be good for a couple of months, lots of fish to be caught. In mid June and July is a good time to fish for bass. I know there are some big bass in this lake. So try this lake out. There is a resort for over niters and they do charge to launch a boat or fish off the dock but it’s worth it. Good Luck!

Tips for Silver Lake

Fishing from the dock. This is a really long dock so you have a lot of room to fish. I like to fish with a bobber and worm. Maggots work also. Try fishing about 3 to 4 feet deep if you catch little fish go another 2 to 3 feet deeper.

Fishing off the bottom. Try a slip sinker and 18” leader with power bait. Any color.  Mealworms work well to. Keep some slack in the line and let the fish take the bait, but if you fishing for catfish leave the line tight.

Fishing from a boat. Troll using a wedding ring (green or red) use your pop gear if you want. I usually troll strait out from the dock going back and forth. If you want to still fish go across the lake were the farmhouse is and fish with a bobber and worm. Also fish in the middle of the lake. When the water is smooth, as glass you will see the fish surface, believe me then you’ll know were to go with the boat.

Fishing for Bass and Catfish. In the months of June, July fishing for bass is very good. If you’re looking out from the boat launch fish the right side of the lake, in the lily pads. And try all along the edges.

If you’ve got some tips or comments for this lake please e-mail me and let me know. And let me know if these tips help you. Like to here about it! Thanks and happy fishing!

Riffe Lake

02/03/01

Power crunch? I think yes, with this Lake open all year round with 11,830 acres to fish there should be no problem fishing. About 4 years ago this Lake was low but this is the lowest I’ve seen it as you can see from the pictures. I usually fish at the dam but I could not find one single person fishing. I would have had to walk down another 15 feet after the walkway ended just to get to the water. I drove to the other side to Riffe Park to see what that looked like. The water was farther out from the campsite. I could not find anybody fishing. I would think with all the water that was let out that would equal less water more fish? The worms I bought are the lucky ones this time.

E-Mail Me

and let me know what you think

I do like driving to Riffe Lake because if the fish are not biting I’ve got about 5-6 other lakes to fish at on the way home. Like Alder Lake, oh wait a minute where did the water go? Here’s another lake that’s low (really low) this was a site to see I could not believe it. I stopped at a couple more lakes on the way home like Ohop Lake and Tanwax Lake, of course these lakes are not all year around anymore so you’ve got to wait until April to fish them. Same with Mineral Lake and Clear Lake. When I took pictures at Mineral Lake and Clear Lake the fish were rolling on top of the water all across the lake. I do know they planted trout in Mineral Lake.

Tips for Riffe Lake

I mostly fish this lake for trout from the dam using a slip bobber with a worm on the hook. I usually start fishing 10 feet down from the surface then I’ll go to 15 feet down to 20-25 feet. If you keep catching little fish go another 5-10 feet. I’ve seen fishermen throw a Dick Night or a Rooster Tail also but I’ve never seen anything caught that way. If you’ve got a tip for fishing from a boat let me know.

Here’s a question: With a lot of Lakes changing from all year round to April thru Oct. How do you feel about it? If you have a comment or opinion on this or anything about fishing please e-mail me and let me know. Happy Fishing!!!

Lake Kapowsin

01/20/01

I got there a little after sunrise. The weather was overcast some clearing. The water looked like a sheet of glass and it was cold. I decided to fish from the dock but there was only one problem, the fish were not biting! I’ve never had this problem before. I talked to the gentlemen that runs the boathouse. it seems this lake has not been stocked with trout for the last 2 years. You know what happens to lakes with no stocked fish--no fish no fun, he did say he was trying to get the state to stock it this year, I hope he suceeds. A couple years back you could fish half the day there and catch at least 3 trout if not limit out. The fish weren’t very long in length but they were sure nice and fat. But times have changed. There is some good news though. The fish that are still there are much bigger, 5 pounds and over. That’s really good for a lake like this! I saw some pictures in the boathouse from late last year and we’re talking 9-10 pound rainbow trout I’m sure there’s a lot more out there but do you have the time and patience for one of these big ones to hit your line? Of course, there’s bass to catch. With this lake being nicknamed Stump Lake or Log Lake there’s plenty of good spots to find them, or you might hook into a catfish but nothing in size.

If you’ve got the time to try catching one of those big boys, it would be better with a boat. There is a little wooden boat ramp that you can slide your 10’, 12’, even your 14’ down into the water. They do rent boats and trolling motors. Then maybe we’ll see your picture on the wall holding a nice 10 pounder!

Tips for Lake Kapowsin

I’ve fished this lake for the past 10 years, I do have some good tips for all to use. The lake covers 512 acres. It is muddy and dirty. If you’re fishing off the dock, it’s best to use a slip sinker with an 18" leader off the bottom. My preference of bait is Power Bait rainbow, orange, spring green. There’s the old marshmallow with worm bait that works well, too. Cast out and leave your bail open with some slack. For boat fishing, use a red or green wedding ring with a worm, no weight, trolling slow so the wedding ring and worms close to the surface. If no luck try a little split shot for weight. Now here’s the key to this set up. Don’t use the leader that comes with the wedding ring TAKE IT OFF Make one using 4 pound test or even 6 pound test. You’ll have much better luck.

Try fishing along the power lines that run North & South, just west of the dock. If you’ve got a fish finder it would be useful. A true fishermen would say that’s cheating but I say take my picture with that 10 pounder I caught using it.

If bass fishing, anywhere along the shore is good. There’s a lot of shore. Take a plastic worm and jig it on the bottom, reeling slowly. To catch crappie and yellow perch, the old standerd is good (worm/hook) You know the rest. I hope these tips work for you! Any questions comments, etc., feel free to e-mail me, I believe the more information we can pass along the better fishing all us fishermen/fisherwoman will have. Happy Fishing!!!

Morton Lake

1-23-01

This lake is 66 acres and a great lake to fish all year round. The day I was there it was sunny but very windy. The state plants this lake and you can fish here either from the shore or in a boat. Most people only come and fish for the first 3 months after it’s been planted so it’s even better fishing the rest of the year. Most of the time you’ll leave with a couple of nice trout or limit out. I have never been out in a boat on this lake but have seen some nice fish come in. I’m planning on taking the boat out next week so I’ll let you know what luck I have. This lake hasn’t been planted yet this year

Tips for the Lake

I do like fishing from the shore but you’re limited on space. Using a slip sinker with an 18" leader on the bottom should do the trick. Use Power Bait: Rainbow, Spring green is my choice but try them all. Keep your line tight and watch the tip of your rod. When fishing from the shore watch out for people launching their boats.

Fishing from a boat, most people troll using a wedding ring (green or red) with Power Bait. Or pop gear. When I take my boat out I’ll try some different set ups and let you know. Fisherman have told me that when trolling the fish hit very lightly so keep that in mind when out in a boat. Happy fishing!!!
